Fabric wrinkles could create unpredictable resistance at the moment of release, destabilizing the arrow. The smooth surface of the chest guard allows the bowstring to glide freely, maintaining shooting speed without interference.

For beginners, who are still mastering their technique and whose movements are not yet refined, wearing a chest guard is particularly advisable to prevent injuries from mistakes. The specific shooting stance and physical build of the archer also determine the necessity of a chest guard. Archers using recurve bows, for example, require more protection than those using compound bows, as recurve bowstrings are more prone to contact the chest. In high-level competitions, such as the Olympics, chest guards are almost essential because even minor factors can influence the final score.
